According to Android Police, the latest update to Android Operating System, Android Kitkat will ditch the messaging app. The SMS and MMS will be integrated into the Hangouts App. Artem Russakovskii, who posted this rumour on Android Police also suggested that this rumour is “all but confirmed”.
Android Police also managed to get a screenshot of this new feature, which backs the rumour pretty well. Have a look at it:
It’s hard to say when will it be available for users. But since it’s an in-app update, it could be announced before or after Android 4.4 is released.
Facebook Messenger is also known to allow the integration of SMS into their messenger app. Hangouts might as well do it soon enough.
The post also includes a few mockups depicting the changes in the dock. Take a look:
Before the Hangouts App was launched:
After the Hangouts App was launched:
What Kitkat will make it:
One thing is clear that Google has been trying to add more features to their Hangouts App. and given that, people no longer use the messaging app that much thanks to the Instant Messengers. Under this circumstances if you see the messaging app disappearing, it shouldn’t take you by surprise.
